Waterlase Laser Dentistry

Many dental procedures can be performed without needles or numbness using the Waterlase laser.  Waterlase dentistry uses fewer or no shots and less anesthesia reducing patient anxiety and providing a more relaxing dental experience.  In the past 2 years I have not had to give a child patient a “shot” for fillings.  For adults I have not had to anesthetize any anterior teeth for a filling, and many fillings in the back teeth can also be done without shots.

What is Laser Dentistry?
The Waterlase laser used in our office uses laser energized water to safely perform procedures.  The YSGG laser energy is produced by combining a spray of atomized water with laser energy, a process called HydroPhotonics.  The energized water gently and precisely removes a wide range of human tissue including tooth enamel and the underlying decayed dentin, bone, and  soft tissues in the mouth (gum, cheek, tongue) or lip.  Since there is no heat or vibration the laser reduces the need for needles and anesthesia.

What are the benefits of Laser Dentistry?
No needles or numbness in most children’s procedures
(kids won’t chew their lip or cheek and can eat right away)
No needles or numbness in many adult tooth procedures
The laser’s pinpoint accuracy precisely allows the dentist to leave as
much healthy tooth structure as possible
Waterlase cavity preparations can increase bond strength of tooth-colored restorations resulting in stronger longer lasting fillings
Gently performs numerous soft tissue (gum, cheek, tongue, lip) procedures with little or no bleeding, and less post-op swelling

What Procedures can be performed with the Laser?
Cavity preparations
Removal of decay
Save teeth that are badly decayed, cracked or broken below the gum or bone
Cosmetic gum re-contouring (make short teeth look longer and make thick puffy gums look thinner and healthier)
Relieve painful canker sores on lips and gums, and accelerate their healing
Soft tissue procedures (frenulectomies, gingivectomy gum trimming and biopsies)
Periodontal gum disease treatment
