ORAL HEALTH (GUM INFECTION, GUM INFLAMMATION, GINGIVITIS) LINKED TO OVERALL BODY HEALTH AND MANY DISEASES

Scientific evidence continues to mount, linking oral conditions and gum disease to many diseases, specifically, heart disease, fatal heart attacks, stroke, pre-term births, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, pneumonia, organ transplant failure, pancreatic and other cancers. Very recently a 35-year-old mother’s gum disease was linked to her full-term, stillborn infant. It was found that the specific oral bacteria from her gum disease entered her bloodstream and traveled to her placenta. Because the placenta is an immune-suppressed organ, it is easy for the bacteria to colonize the placenta, and then infect the fetus. Bacterial plaque samples from the mother’s teeth were found to be positive for the exact same strain of the oral bacteria found in the stillborn baby’s stomach and lungs (a copy of this article is available in our office).

Gum disease and gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gums) has been shown to increase the risk of the following diseases:
1. Heart disease: 700% increased risk
2. Fatal heart attack: 50% increased risk
3. Stroke: 300% increased risk
4. Pre-term birth: 700% increased risk
5. Diabetes
6. Pneumonia
7. Rheumatoid arthritis
8. Organ transplant failure
9. Various cancers, pancreatic
10. Alzheimer’s Disease
